Florida Woman Arrested For Breastfeeding Baby While Driving Drunk

A Florida woman was taken into custody on Tuesday by the police for allegedly breastfeeding her 2-month-old baby while driving under the influence of alcohol.

WKMG report stated that according to Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies, they were stopping Cateria Thomas, 33, for an altered tag in New Smyrna Beach but found something much more disturbing.

Police officers found Thomas sitting in the driver’s seat of the motor vehicle breastfeeding an infant. 3 toddlers aged 1, 3, and 4 were also in the motor vehicle. A full gas can was also found in the passenger seat of the motor vehicle.

The mother had red, watery, glassy eyes according to the deputies and she was unsteady while performing a field sobriety test.

Thomas refused to give a breath sample for the intoxication test but told officers that she had eaten 4 hamburgers with whiskey on them.

On Tuesday night, she remained in Volusia County jail for a child act that can result in physical or mental injury, DUI, operating with a suspended, cancelled, or revoked license, and unlawful alteration to her tag.

WKMG also told that the 4 children are in state custody and the Florida Department of Children and Families is conducting background checks on Thomas’ relatives to search an appropriate place for the children.

The DCF issued a statement to WKMG in which it said that the safety of children is the Department’s main concern. It was written in the statement, “We are very concerned about this incident. This is very alarming that you would have someone trying to breastfeed their child while driving and especially while driving drunk. Seldom, do we see this type of incident taking place”.

Thomas told that she has been taken into custody 4 times since 2003 for multiple offenses in which child abuse, battery, burglary, and third-degree grand theft were included.
